standard Shizuoka International Opera Competition

Official Website

Category: Voice
Date: November 8 to 20, 2014
Country: Japan

Established in 1996, the competition is held in memory of the famous Japanese opera singer Tamaki Miura, known for her role as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. Located at Shizuoka, famous for its ski resorts and the standing Fuji Mountain within the region, the competition runs every three years with an aim to discover world’s new vocal talents. Candidates are required to perform a full role, singing the repertoire from beginning to the end, in order to become finalists- thus adds on to the difficulty of the event. This is because the foundation board believes a good opera singer ought to be capable of more than just singing opera arias- and such is why the event is named “Opera Competition”. Held at a place where Tamaki Miura was born, the competition also hopes to create a unique Shizuoka Culture to benefit the world through intimate international exchange of music. Past winners include Akie Mitsuoka, Vasily V. Ladyuk, Hyun Ju Park.
