Named after the legendary New Zealander philanthropist, jeweller and entrepreneur Sir Michael Hill, the competition is established out of the founder’s love for the violin to foster young violinists worldwide. Since its inauguration in 2001, the contest has become a much-anticipated biennial event in the international music scene. Violinists from around the world have to perform a vast range of repertoire, including a unique set-piece by a New Zealand composer commissioned for each edition. Musical luminaries such as Pierre Amoyal, Boris Kuschnir and Cho-Liang Lin have been amongst the international panel of jurors. Many winning contestants have achieved remarkable successes. Previous prize winners include Ning Feng, Natalia Lomeiko and Josef Špaček.
