The festival was established in 1919 by Oskar Hagen, art historian and father of actress Uta Hagen. Based in Göttingen, the event has largely focused on the music of Handel, helping to revive and cultivate increased performances of his music during the twentieth century. Every year, the festival produces one fully staged opera and several oratorios of the composer, together with chamber music, open-air classic events and late evening concerts. Professional musicians from around the world are invited to present the masterpieces employing historical baroque performance practices.
